Playwright to Attend Playmakers’ “Sam & Laura”
Theatre ⁄ Dance
Date: Active through .Time: 7:30 am
Location: Grove, Ok
It is rare for a community theatre to be able to discuss a play with the playwright, even more so to ask him to change lines or characters. But with Ron Powers, author of The Playmakers’ upcoming production, “Sam & Laura,” that is exactly what has been happening. “For the cast and for me as director, the relationship with Mr. Powers as been both exciting and fun,” says Suzanne Boles. “The emails have been zinging back and forth with ideas, up to the minute script changes, and comments to help the cast create even better characters. He will be here to see a performance and meet all of The Playmakers involved in this production. He will conduct a Master Class, also, for the Off Broadway Troupers, made possible by the Kathleen Patton Westby Foundation. What a Valentine gift to The Playmakers and for the community.”
The playwright is the author of “Mark Twain: A Life,” a finalist for the 2005 National Book Critics Circle award in biography. Powers won the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 1973 for his critical writing as TV-radio-columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times about television during 1972. In 1985, Powers won an Emmy Award for his work on CBS News Sunday Morning. He is on the Advisory Board of the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum in Hannibal, Mo. He is, like Sam Clemens, from Hannibal, Mo.
“Sam and Laura” is based on a true romantic incident in the life of young Sam Clemens, an encounter that forever influenced his dream-life and his literature. The action takes place in Laura Wright’s threadbare Los Angeles apartment and a Hollywood speakeasy in 1925, with extended flashbacks to the New Orleans riverfront in 1858; a makeshift hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1858; a farmhouse in Warsaw, Missouri, in 1860; a newspaper office in Virginia City, Nevada, during the Civil War years; a rooming house; a Hawaiian dreamscape; his home in Elmira, NY, and a Dallas schoolroom. This has been a challenge for set personnel, Vicki King and Linda Dubois, and for Marge Chowning, costume designers and coordinator. Add hoop skirts to the staging (and The Playmakers’ small stage) and both set and costume people quietly retreat into their problem-solving minds. Then, enter the lighting and sound people!
The production opens Feb 4 and runs Fridays, Saturdays and Tuesdays at 7;30 pm
and Sunday matinees at 2:00 pm through Feb 19 at 121 W. 3rd St, in Grove, Ok. The suggested minimum maturity level for the is elementary school students. Reservations can be made online at www. gcplaymakers.com, or by calling 918-786-8950, or by emailing 1groveplaymakers@sbcglobal.net. Adult tickets are $15, students (Elementary through 12th grade) $8. Group rates are available, also.
