Second Chance Pet Rescue Heat Safety Tips for Pets from Angel
I'm Angel and I fit my name to a tee!  I'm a female mixed breed, medium size dog with a beautiful honey colored coat.  My temperament is gentle, quiet and very loving.  I would make a great family pet.   Please visit me and my other friends at Second Chance Pet Rescue. If adopted, I would be your instant friend for life.
Angel wants to share some heat safety tips for all family pets.  High temperatures and humidity with heat indexes in the triple digits are not only a concern for humans but for your four-legged friends too.  Angel and Second Chance Pet Rescue ask that pet owners do some basic things to help your dog or cat have a cool and safe summer.
If your pet has to be outside, make sure they have plenty of fresh water and a good shaded area so they don't end up having a heat stroke.  Angel suggests that owners have multiple bowls of water, including frozen bowls of water that will melt throughout the day so cool water is readily available.
Some helpful tips to keep your pet cool include having a small plastic swimming pool full of water and spraying or hosing down your pets with the water hose.  Pet owners of outside pets should put up a canopy to provide a place where the sun's rays are not constantly shining down on your pet.  Also make sure your pet is groomed and doesn't have a matted coat of fur.  An outside dog that is matted, along with the hot temperatures, may be enough to kill some animals.
Do NOT leave your pets in the car, even for a minute, regardless if you crack the windows, because the temperature can rapidly become dangerous.  It is better to leave a pet at home or with a neighbor or friend than leave it in a car.  If you must take an animal in the car, make sure the air conditioning is left on.  And pet owners should NOT let their dogs ride in the bed of trucks in the summer, as the metal surfaces can burn the pads of their feet.
Don't exercise your dog in the heat of the day.  Plan your walks for early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler.  Even if your dog is in good shape, it can become easily overheated in hot, humid weather.
Signs of overheating include elevated body temperature and heart rate, increased breathing rate, unresponsive behavior, seizures, vomiting and diarrhea.  If heat stress occurs, move the animals to a cooler area or in the shade and call a veterinarian immediately.
