Beautiful and Busy Past Weekend on Grand Lake

It seems like last week was “Welcome Back Weekend” and yet here we are at the big Memorial Day holiday weekend, already.  Time flies when you live in paradise! The Lake Bum Official Holiday Weekend Rules are in effect this weekend.  No fighting, no puking, no driving while you’re drunk, no hitting on someone else’s date, no bragging about how much money you have (or how much your daddy has) or how important you are, no religion, no politics – and lots of patience.  Everybody will be busy, busy, busy and nobody can staff up to handle huge crowds of people who only come to the lake two or three times a year.  Be nice to the people who are working so you can play. Wait patiently, tip generously and, most importantly – have a safe and fun-filled weekend.  That’s what Grand Lake is all about. We don’t care who you are or what you have, we just want you to have fun – and we want everybody around you to have fun, as well.

If you’re new to Grand Lake, we are fortunate to have lots of restaurants and bars, many of which are accessible by boat, and many of which will feature live entertainment this weekend.  If you spend a holiday weekend on Grand Lake (or any weekend) and don’t have a wonderful time, it’s your own damn fault!

I thought we were going to be safe from government over-reach and personal harm because the legislature has to adjourn this week.  Sadly, since they didn’t do anything but pass unconstitutional laws and a few laws that will only hurt poor people who can’t fight back, they’re talking about the possibility of a special session. They’re even considering changing the name of some “taxes” to “fees,” so they can raise them without requiring as much support. In the Grand Lake realm, they’re discussing raising some money by taking 2% of GRDA’s money (so they won’t just “waste” it by investing in Grand Lake). It’s all embarrassing. Remember the wise words of Gideon John Tucker (often mistakenly attributed to Mark Twain): “No man’s life, liberty, or property is safe while the legislature is in session.” Ain’t it the truth?

I guess you have to be very specific, no matter where you are.  A judge in Pakistan’s anti-terrorism court questioned a constable about a grenade that was in evidence.  He asked how it worked.  Apparently the constable either didn’t understand that the judge wanted an explanation – or maybe he couldn’t explain it.  Instead, he pulled the pin to demonstrate how it works. Fortunately, everybody is expected to survive their injuries suffered in the courtroom explosion.

There are some things that even a judge seems to have no control over.  Take the court in Israel, for example, where the judge refused a man’s request for a restraining order….against God.  No kidding, I don’t make this stuff up.  The guy claimed the Almighty had exhibited a “seriously negative attitude toward him” over the past few years.  The judge refused the request, even though God didn’t show up to argue his case (or at least no one could see him, if he did show). If they had looked, they probably would have found God in the jail – at least that seems to be where a lot of people find Him.

I’m not exactly sure what the students did in class, but officials at Energy Institute High School in Houston finally admitted their French teacher had a problem.  She doesn’t speak French. Must have known somebody.

The Memorial weekend weather looks like it does every year.  Might rain. Probably not. There’s a 30% chance of scattered thunderstorms (I’m not sure what the actual percentages of “30% chance of scattered” works out to, but I’m not worrying about it). High temperatures will be in the mid-80s. Looks like a boating and golf weekend. Jump right in the middle of it and party outdoors all day and at your favorite Grand Lake club all night.  Remember, though, wherever you choose to party, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you.  It could be me.
