Shape Your Future

Shape Your Future is an Oklahoma community health education intervention encouraging Oklahomans to eat better, move more, be tobacco free and drink water.
Simple lifestyle changes can reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, some cancers, stroke and diabetes. Fill half your plate with fruits and veggies. Get 30 minutes of activity every day, or 60 minutes if you’re a kid. Be tobacco free. Choose water over sugary drinks.

How can TSET make the biggest difference?

• TSET is currently the state’s largest funder of prevention in tobacco and obesity.
• According to the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, investing in public health prevention shows a return on investment of 4-to-1.
• What contributes to premature deaths?
There are five primary factors that contribute to premature deaths – Genetics (30%), social circumstances (15%), environmental exposure (5%), access to health care (10%), and behavioral patterns (40%)
Of those, we can’t really change a person’s genetics, their social circumstances (socio-economically), or their environment (where they choose to live).
However, TSET can help with behavioral patterns and access to health care.
Of those two important areas where TSET can make a real impact, behavioral patterns have far more influence on a person’s likelihood of premature death than access to health care. Think of it this way, if your dog has fleas, you can bathe the dog in a special shampoo to get rid of them. However, if the environment your dog is in still has fleas, your dog will soon have fleas again. So, unless we change environments to reinforce healthy and tobacco-free behaviors, we aren’t helping Oklahomans to live their best, most healthy lives.
