A Grand Lake, sparkling like a gem

In February, BoatUS magazine compiled a list of nine “must see” freshwater lakes for boaters. And right there in the middle of that list? One lake many of us know well: Grand Lake.

Grand made the list along with other famous lakes in the country, including Lake Tahoe in California/Nevada and Lake Powell in Arizona. However, on the map, Grand stands alone in the Central United States. It was the only lake selected in the area east of the Rocky Mountains and west of the Mississippi River.

According to the BoatUs.com article, Grand “sparkles like a gem in the forested foothills of the Ozark Mountain Range” which makes its setting one of the key reasons for its addition to the list. Many tourism and recreation amenities, located all around the lakeshore, also helped secure its place among the country’s “must see” list. The water itself, which provides ample rooms for all boaters, floaters, sailors, skiers, and swimmers is also an attractive draw. And, of course, Grand Lake has long enjoyed a reputation as a premiere destination for all anglers.

The Grand River Dam Authority is proud of Grand’s inclusion on this list. Since the lake’s creation in 1940, GRDA has been focused on its mission to be a good steward of these waters under its control. Through its ecosystems and watershed management programs, support of economic development in the lake region, efforts to promote water and boating safety and other activities, Team GRDA is working every day to make sure this is always a “Grand” lake for all visitors.

GRDA is Oklahoma’s largest public power electric utility; fully funded by revenues from electric and water sales instead of taxes. Each day, GRDA strives to be an “Oklahoma agency of excellence” by focusing on the 5 E’s: electricity, economic development, environmental stewardship, employees, and efficiency.
