#DineSmall

From lakeside dining to homestyle cafes, the Grand Lake area offers shoppers a wide variety of local restaurants where they can #DineSmall this holiday season.

For many, Black Friday signals the official start of holiday shopping. They spend the day after Thanksgiving racing frantically from big box stores to nationwide chain stores, trying to get the best deals of the season.

This year, the small businesses in the Grand Lake area invite you to take a more sedate approach and consider starting your local holiday shopping on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 25.

Founded by American Express in 2010, Small Business Saturday has become an annual shopping tradition dedicated to supporting small businesses and celebrating communities across the country. Because small businesses play a key role in helping communities thrive, the Small Business Saturday #ShopSmall movement helps support local economies.

How important are small businesses?

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy, there are 345,839 small businesses operating in Oklahoma, which make up 99.4 percent of all businesses in the state. In 2014 alone, 10,136 new jobs were created by small businesses, meaning that year 52.10 percent of all employees in Oklahoma were working for a small business.

Many Grand Lake small businesses will be taking part in Small Business Saturday. Some will be hosting events while others will be offering special discounts throughout the day and continuing through the holiday season.

This will be Becky King-Moore’s second year participating in Small Business Saturday as a business owner. Last year’s event was the biggest day of the year at her then newly opened shop, Southern Darlin’s Boutique, in Langley. After seeing the very real power of the #ShopSmall campaign last year, King-Moore has become a strong advocate of Small Business Saturday. She has actively been promoting the event at her shop and on social media.

“I want to rally small businesses and shoppers in our community,” King-Moore said. “I’m doing this in hopes of inspiring my community to support the spots they call home. Places like me keep our community strong and vibrant, potentially employing our friends, family and neighbors.”

Hoping to have as successful a day as last year, King-Moore and Southern Darlin’s Boutique will be hosting a Small Business Saturday event from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Located at 1666 N. 3rd St., Suite 2, in Langley, Southern Darlin’s has planned a full day of fun games, door prizes, giveaways, tasty snacks and refreshments.

The first 100 customers on Saturday will receive free decorated canvas bags. The vintage mall will also be offering free crafts for kids and lots and lots of shopping, including new Christmas arrivals in each booth.

There will be red-hot fall specials available throughout the day. King-Moore says expect to find Black Friday prices on Small Business Saturday.

Southern Darlin’s will also giving away three grand prizes worth $500 in total. Every $25 you spend at the mall enters you into a drawing for the grand prizes. The drawing will be held at the end of the day. You don’t have to be present to win.

Although the theme for Small Business Saturday focuses on holiday shopping, supporting local small businesses can extend beyond retail stores. Small businesses in the service industry are also part of the #ShopSmall focus with many offering discounts and promotions as well.

Collins Electric of Vinita is one such small business.

“We believe in keeping it local,” said Becky Collins, who, along with her husband, Jeff, owns and operates Collins Electric of Vinita. “We urge everyone to support your small businesses. There’s no need to call contractors out of Tulsa. Use your neighbors.”

Because now is a good time to call about remodeling or any electrical needs, the family-owned and operated, full-service electrical company is currently offering a fall and winter special that will continue beyond Nov. 25. The special offers a $15 discount on the first hour of labor.

Collins urges customers to take advantage of this special discount.
