Second Chance Pet Rescue's "Mulligan" Wants to Find His Forever Home
Second Chance Pet Rescue would like to have a real celebration in 2019 for Mulligan - celebrating his forever home! Mulligan is a Labrador Retriever mix between 6 or 8 years old that really deserves a home of his own. The shelter staff thinks of him as an older gentle giant with a sweet soul. His big body and short legs just make him all the more special. Mulligan is celebrating an anniversary, although celebrating might not be the right word. He hasn't found the right home for him, and he has been at the rescue for over a year. He is leash trained, still has a lot of pep to his step, and loves to go for walks. He is looking for a soft couch to lay on and a best friend to call his own.
Mulligan's story illustrates one of the most vital things a prospective pet owner should bring when visiting any animal shelter - an open mind. A playful puppy or kitten might catch their eye at first, but older pets can be just as loyal and lovable and may even better fit their lifestyle.
A pet owner's decision to adopt an older pet can also take on lifesaving importance because older pets are usually the last to be adopted. Senior dogs, for example, have a 25 percent adoption rate compared to the 60 percent adoption rate of younger dogs and puppies.
With the adoption of an older pet, it's important to know and share some of the least realized reasons why an older pet may be the best match for you, including the following:
- Older dogs have often grown out of habits that a puppy has not, including teething, destructive behavior, and accidents in the house.
- Older pets typically have some basic training, and know how to respond to important commands such as "sit" and down".
- Mature pets are likely to settle into a home more easily than younger pets, often due to past experiences living in houses among people or other pets.
- While a puppy's characteristics and disposition might change over time as he matures, a senior pet is less likely to change because his personality has already developed. This doesn't mean "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" because older pets are extremely adaptive and fully capable of learning new skills.
Second Chance Pet Rescue's "Senior Pets for Seniors" adoption program makes it possible for senior citizens to have an older animal companion such as Mulligan in their life. The program places our senior dogs and cats with senior citizens who are 62 years of age or older. Because it is so important to us for our senior pets to find that right home and not languish in the shelter, the adoption fee will be waived. Yes, waived, for our featured Pet.
