PGA Year in Review

PGA Year in Review

The 2015-16 PGA Tour season is now in the books, which means the 2016-17 season is essentially here. For those looking to reminisce one last time on the recent season, we’ve got you covered. Here are 14 stats from the season that are sure to blow your mind.

Jason Day Putted Better Than Anyone This Decade

Day’s putter was hot all season long, as he earned a 1.13 average in strokes gained putting. To give that some context, Jordan Spieth ranked second with .758. The next best year-long performance in the past decade came from Jesper Parnevik in 2009 at .979. Day topped that by 15%.

Brendan Todd Missed 25 Cuts in 29 Tries

Todd’s 2016 season will be a year to forget. Twenty-nine events is higher than average, but making the cut only four times is so low a number that it’s likely beating the odds, especially for a former Tour winner. Todd made $75,772 on Tour in 2016.

Steven Bowditch Didn’t Break 80 12 times

Bowditch carded consecutive rounds of 81, 80, 80, 84 and 81 from the WGC-Cadillac Championship through the first round of the Valspar a week later. That was just five rounds in his season where the Australian didn’t break 80. He would add another seven such rounds during the year. Nonetheless, he made $450,000 on the course.

Kevin Chappell Made $4.5 Million With Zero Wins

Chappell made a killing off second place finishes this year, earning runner-up honors (and money) four times. Two of those finishes came at prominent events (The Players and Tour Championship), and kept Chappell as one of the top-10 money earners this seasons, despite not winning at all.

Peter Malnati Missed 18 of 19 Cuts

Malnati won during the fall season, at the Sanderson Farms Championship. He made some other quality showings throughout the fall, but once he met February, his season tanked. Malnati’s T13 at the Valero Texas Open was his lone cut from the middle of February to the middle of August.

Jason Day Made Three (!) 70-foot Putts

There were 13 putts of 70 feet or longer made on Tour this year, and Day made three of them, once at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, once at the PGA Championship and once during The Barclays. For good measure, he added another 64-footer this year. That's how you rack up those strokes gained putting.

Adam Hadwin Went 314 Holes Without a Three-Putt

Hadwin made a name for himself during the middle of the season by being consistently solid with his putter, holding the season record of 314 consecutive holes without a three-putt. The current longest streak is held by fellow Canadian David Hearn at 222 holes.

133 Drives of 380 Yards or Longer

Is the distance the current ball travels a problem? Maybe. Either way, the PGA Tour players continue to bomb the ball, to the tune of 133 drives of 380 yards or more. That includes eight drives that traveled 400+.

Dustin Johnson Made $131,904 Per Round

Johnson will be the PGA Tour Player of the Year after making $9.37 million on Tour this season. He made 15 top-10s in just 22 events. Break those numbers out and it equates to $131,904 per round. Not bad, even if it takes six hours.

Willett Wins Masters Shooting Even on Par-5s

Most Masters Champions dominate the four par-5s at Augusta National. Danny Willett did not, shooting even par on the week, the lowest par-5 total in at least 15 years. He’ll gladly take the green jacket though.

Ken Duke Gained 10.5 Strokes on the Field with a 65

Duke’s Saturday round at the Players Championship didn’t garner him a victory or anything more than just pride, even if it was possibly the round of the year (Jim Furyk included). Duke was one of just three players in the field that broke 70 that day, and the only one to shoot 65. Impressive stuff from the 47-year-old.

One Top 10, One Victory

Four players won a single event this year, with that finish being their only top-10 on the season. Talk about efficiency. Charley Hoffman, Brian Stuard, Vaughn Taylor and Greg Chalmers each won a PGA Tour event this season and were unable to garner another top-10 finish.

No Wins for ZJ

Zach Johnson struggled to live up to his previous standards in 2016, with zero top-3 finishes this year. It was the first year since 2004 that Johnson recorded five top-10 finishes and was unable to turn his consistency into a victory.

Parity Reigns Again

2016 was the 22nd straight year where six or more players won multiple times on Tour. The likes of Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and Russell Knox all won multiple times last year.

Patricia Island Golf Report from Mike Kelly (Kelly Golf in Grove,OK)

Don't make these golfing mistakes!

If you make an error (whatever it is), try to stay calm. Always favor accuracy over distance (if you can’t ensure both) to get a solid, straight fly. Remember, consider only one shot at a time.

When reflecting about your next shot, always go for the one that will give you the highest chance to keep the ball in play, Remember, a lot of greens are purposely designed in such a way that shooting directly towards the flag will drive you into trouble……….don’t fall into that trap !

GOLF TIP OF THE WEEK

Most golfers get the feet too wide. Take note that your feet should narrow slightly as the distance you want to hit gets shorter. It would be best if you never let your feet get wider than your shoulders.
