22 January Random Observations of The Grand Lake Bum

I hope you have figured out how to survive in the winter weather that is normally reserved for states a little further north than us. The sub-freezing weather did, however, teach me something I didn’t know about golf. Last Saturday, even though the high temperature only reached 26, there was sunshine and just a tiny little breeze. It felt pretty nice, compared to previous days, so I decided to take advantage of that Shangri-Low golf special at Shangri-La and play a few holes for only nine bucks. I learned, however, golf is not allowed when the greens are frozen. I was looking forward to it because all the water hazards were also frozen – and that gave me my only chance at playing a round without losing multiple balls in the water hazards. Oh, well. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

If you’ve missed the first two big Oklahoma boat shows of the year, you just have a couple more opportunities. The Tulsa Boat, Sport & Travel Show kicks off next Monday night and continues through February 4 at Tulsa’s SageNet Center at the fairgrounds – and the Grand Lake Boat Show will be at the Craig County Fairgrounds again this year, March 8-10.

Just when you thought you had heard everything…two New York City men have filed a lawsuit against superstar Madonna. At a concert scheduled for 8:30 in Brooklyn last month, Madonna didn’t actually take the stage herself until 10:45. So, of course, they sued her. They claim the late start impacted their lives because “they had to get up early and go to work the next day.” I’m surprised they didn’t sue their employers, too!

I guess Oklahoma Governor Stitt is not a man of patience – and he’s not making any friends in the legislature. He has called for a special legislative session January 29. I guess he either got too excited or didn’t realize the legislature will go into their regular session seven days later.

*****

When the legislature goes into session, they’ll have plenty to do. A total of 2,076 pieces of legislation have been pre-filed for consideration. Stand by, folks. The list of things you won’t be allowed to do is going to get a lot longer.

*****

In the ever-growing unnecessary overabundance of caution, State Senator Warren Hamilton has filed legislation that would require librarians from all public and charter schools to make a list of every book in inventory every year and submit the list to the Oklahoma Department of Education (for approval or disapproval, I assume). I’m thinking it’s going to take a herd of staffers just to read the lists, never mind researching each book to see what it’s about. Another solution in search of a problem.

RANDY KREHBIEL’S RANDOM FACTOID OF THE WEEK: Traditionally, the Kiowa cut their hair short along the temples to the back of the ears. This was to keep it out of the way when shooting a bow.

In the NFL, we’re down to just four teams. It’s Conference Championship weekend. Both games are Sunday – the AFC Championship at 2:00 and the NFC Championship at 5:30.

In the NBA, the OKC Thunder were just home for a minute before heading back on the road this week in a really tough schedule. After facing the Spurs Wednesday, the Thunder travel to New Orleans for a Friday night game (7:00). They’re back home for back-to-back games hosting Detroit Sunday (5:00) and Minnesota Monday (7:00). After only a day of rest, they host Denver next Wednesday (7:00).

College basketball conference play continues this week. Saturday, OU hosts Texas Tech and OSU hosts West Virginia, both at 1:00. Next Tuesday, both teams play again, but on the road. OU is at Kansas State at 7:00 and OSU is at Kansas at 8:00.

PGA Players are still in California. They’re in Torrey Pines in San Diego for the Farmers Insurance Open. Don’t miss the opening round. This is a Wednesday-Saturday tournament instead of the normal Thursday-Sunday. Coverage begins at 2:00 Wednesday-Friday and 1:00 Saturday on the Golf Channel. CBS picks up the final two rounds at 4:00 Friday and 3:00 Saturday.

The weather for the final weekend of January looks a whole lot better than the past couple of weeks. Our low temperatures for the coming weekend will be more like our high temperatures last weekend – in the upper 20s. Highs will be in the low 50s Friday and mid-40s Saturday & Sunday before jumping back into the low 50s Monday. NFL Conference Championship games are Sunday. Party on! I hope your team wins. Remember, though, wherever you decide to party, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It might  be me!
