April 8 Random Observations of The Grand Lake Bum

If all the weekends could be like last weekend, I would be good. Great friends, great fun, beautiful weather, time on the water, good music, and a really fun hypnotism/comedy show – leaf-bearing trees and increasingly green golf courses filled with happy people with white legs wearing shorts. Maybe we’re on the right side of Spring now!

I’m glad President Trump backed off his talk about closing the Mexican border. There’s that tariff thing he’s talking about on cars, but there are other places to get cars. Avocados, though! What’s Taco Tuesday without guacamole?

*****

Charles Eugene Ferris and Christopher Hicks of Rogers, Arkansas win the coveted “Darwin Award” this week. Apparently out of interesting things to do while drinking away a Sunday afternoon, they took turns donning a bulletproof vest and shooting each other. They both survived, but both were arrested for aggravated assault. Apparently “stupid” is not a crime; but you still can’t fix it.

Dan O’Neil was elected mayor of Edmond last week. I’m not sure how he feels about his “mandate,” even though he got 67% of the vote. His opponent, former Mayor Charles Lamb, received 2,159 votes…even though he died in December.

Truth is stranger than fiction. A mother in Brazil tried to get a father for her daughter, but ended up getting twice as much as she asked for. When she filed a paternity suit against the guy she claimed to be the father of her child, he accused his identical twin brother of actually fathering the child. DNA tests showed each twin had the same scientific chance of being the father. Neither brother would confess, though, so the judge ordered them both to pay child support. It’s good news for the mother and daughter who will receive twice the amount normally awarded; but I’m predicting the holiday family gatherings are going to be a little awkward from now on.

Habits can be hard to break. A Stuart, Florida man proved the point again last week. Casey Michael Lewis was released on bond after being arrested on grand theft charges. But it wasn’t long before he was right back in jail. In fact, it was only 15 minutes. He couldn’t even make it out of the parking lot at the jail before he was arrested on burglary charges for breaking into cars.

Some things are just tough to figure out. For example, you might think everyone would agree that it should be against the law for teachers to have sex with their students. But, if that’s what you think, you are wrong. A proposed law in Rhode Island would ban such relationships, even if the high schoolers had reached the ripe old age of 16. But there was opposition. In fact, two teachers’ unions showed up at a legislative hearing to express their opposition to the proposed law. Things that make you go, “hmm.”

DINING AND DRINKING ON GRAND LAKE: There’s another Guest Chef event at The Shebang Wednesday night, April 10. Chef Adams, resident chef from Springfield Grocers, will do the honors. Honey Creek BBQ is now open just south of Honey Creek Bridge. Same ownership as The Parrot. Good stuff!

FEEL-OLD MOMENTS OF THE WEEK: Talk show icon David Letterman turns 72 this week; and legendary singer/songwriter Leon Russell would have turned 77 last week. He released “Leon Russell and the Shelter People” 48 years ago. Trumpet player extraordinaire Herb Alpert (remember the Tijuana Brass?) turned 84 last week.

The weekend ahead of us doesn’t look quite as awesome as the weekend behind us…but it still looks pretty spring-like! We may have a shower or two, but we’ll have highs around 60 and lows in the 40’s. Not too shabby. Of course, the weather is always perfect for indoor dining & drinking at Grand Lake.  So, party on! Remember, though… be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me.
