August 13 Random Observations of The Grand Lake Bum

Another outstanding Grand Lake weekend is in the books, with another one coming up on the near horizon. The “Woodstock on the Water” event in Hippy Hollow Cove (Lawhead Hollow) was a lot of fun. The Barrett Lewis Band was great, as always, and there was no shortage of folks in the big raft-up – including the overnight raft-up – to celebrate Grand Lake’s 78th birthday. Arrowhead and Cherokee Yacht Clubs did a really nice job providing food for the folks who showed up for the celebration. I got out of there just in time to make it back to Monkey Island to celebrate the 52nd wedding anniversary for Grand Lake legends Larry & Joyce Duke – then on to Shangri-La to catch a great show by 5th Element at Eddy’s – and got up in time for a rare brunch treaton Sunday morning. And nothing wraps up a weekend like drinks and fried chicken with friends on the patio at The Shebang. Another great one is behind me – and an even bigger Grand Lake weekend is just ahead. I do love this time of year!

I have great news for almost all the guys I know. A new study from Yale University says women are attracted to men who are a little older and have beer bellies! Seriously. The study says having more body fat indicates to the ladies that a guy will focus more on family – and that the chances of him finding another woman and leaving are lower. How ironic is that? The fact that women think we would not be appealing to other women is actually appealing to women!!  If that’s not enough good news, the same study indicates that men with  lower testosterone levels (resulting in increased fat mass) are less likely to suffer from heart attacks and prostate cancer. So, pop another beer and enjoy your long life! You’re welcome.

To be clear, this didn’t happen in Oklahoma – or even in this part of the country, but the Center for Disease Control confirmed last week that 436 people have contracted an intestinal illness linked to salads sold at McDonalds. My question is – who the hell goes to McDonalds for SALAD?

We may have a new record for the most expensive joy ride. Farah Hashi is from Wales – and he is “mad about cars.” So, when he visited friends in Dubai, they arranged for him to drive a rented $350,000 Lamborghini Huracan. In less than four hours, he was caught on camera by 33 roadside cameras at speeds up to 150 mph. He’ll be allowed to leave Dubai as soon as he comes up with the $47,000 in fines for the 33 speeding tickets.
