January 16 Random Observations Of The Grand Lake Bum

I survived Friday the 13th totally intact; and I had another great boat show weekend at the OKC Boat & RV Show along with lots of folks from Grand Lake (including three of our biggest dealers). I took time to wander through Bricktown while I was there. They certainly have a lot of drinking establishments to check out in OKC. I did my best! Now it’s back to Grand Lake, dig out my “big boy” clothes and check out the Winter Gala at Shangri-La Saturday night!

I know I’ve probably been having way too much fun analyzing today’s outrageous salaries for athletes, but here’s another little comparison. In 1922 Babe Ruth made 496 appearances at home plate. He was paid $52,000 for the YEAR. A hundred hears later, in 2022, Mike Trout made 499 plate apperaances, and was paid $74,382 for each APPEARANCE AT HOME PLATE.

We all make misstatements or have typos in the things we write periodically, but this is particularly funny because it appeared in a Church Bulletin: The ladies of the church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon.

Don’t be discouraged about your lottery ticket purchases just because we’re not a big city. The Friday the 13th near-record Mega Millions winner of $1.35 billion purchased the winning ticket at Hometown Gas & Grill in Lebanon, Maine – population 6,500. Another $15 million lottery winner is from appropriately-named Luck, Wisconsin – population 1,119.

NFL action is getting really serious now. It’s PLAYOFF TIME. Wild Card Playoffs are already behind us and we’re moving into the Divisional Round this week. There are two games Saturday and two more Sunday to determine who will meet up in the conference championship battles.

The NBA season rolls on this week, too. After hosting Indiana Wednesday, the OKC Thunder hit the road for a Friday night game in Sacramento and a Sunday game in Denver before returning home to host Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks Wednesday.

There are some good college basketball games in the area this week, too. OU hosts Baylor Saturday at 3:00 before traveling to TCU next Tuesday at 7:00. OSU hosts Iowa State in Stillwater Saturday at 1:00, then travels to Texas for a Tuesday night game at 8:00. Arkansas travels to Ole Miss for a Saturday morning game at 11:00, then hosts LSU next Tuesday at 6:00. Kansas plays host to TCU at noon Saturday, and is on the road at Baylor Monday night at 8:00.

This weekend’s weather is still trying to figure out what it wants to do. It’ll be partly cloudy for the most part, but we may have a little shower Saturday morning. It’ll be a little cooler than the weekdays with highs around 50 and lows around 30. It’s a big live entertainment weekend, though, and a great weekend to take advantage of all Grand Lake has to offer indoors! Remember, though, wherever you decide to party, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me!
