January 3 Random Observations Of The Grand Lake Bum

Grand Lake rang in the new year in true fashion. Party, party, party. The football fans on Vyve cable were driven a little wacko, though. For some reason, all the ESPN programming was on the Bally Sports Southwest Channel, and vice versa. To make matters even more confusing, the on-screen guide showed the programming on the right channel, but the actual programs were something else entirely. I hope you found your team! And I hope you stayed warm during that 45-degree temperature drop New Year’s Day.

*****

Congratulations to all the area football teams, too. If you’re a fan of OU, OSU, Tulsa, or Arkansas – you won! I’m not sure a 4-0 bowl record for area teams has ever happened before!

*****

One-and-done OU Football Coach Bob Stoops had a great line after the Alamo Bowl. When asked about a tequila shower instead of the traditional Gatorade, he said, “That’d be okay. What’s the administration gonna do, fire me?”

The new year brings lots of new situations, not the least of which is the change in the workplace. For 50 years, employers have been telling their employees they’re lucky to have jobs. Now, employers are lucky to have employees.

If it’s January, it’s Boat Show Time! The first big boat show of the year is this weekend – The Oklahoma Boat Expo runs Friday-Sunday at the Cox Business Convention Center in downtown Tulsa. Fourteen boat dealers (including all but three Grand Lake dealers) representing 40 different brands of boats will be at the show, as well as RV dealers, PWC and ATV dealers and a variety of tourism-related businesses. Show hours are 11:00-8:00 Friday, 10:00-8:00 Saturday, and 10:00-5:00 Sunday. Details are available at the show’s website www.okboatexpo.com.

I hope you’re enjoying your new 2022 tax cut passed by the legislature last year. It’s one of several new laws that took effect with the flipping of the calendar page. The loss of $137 million in revenue may be harmful to some important programs, but at least we’ll all have about $11.00 more per month. Enjoy.

It’s winter, for sure, but it looks like we might get a little relief for the Grand Lake weekend ahead. Friday’s high will only be in the mid-30s, but Saturday & Sunday high temperatures will hover around 50. Whether you’re headed for the Oklahoma Boat Expo in Tulsa or staying at the lake, make the most of the weekend ahead. Remember, though - no matter where you decide to party, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me!
