July 12 Random Observations Of The Grand Lake Bum

It seems like Grand Lake is becoming the epicenter of the recreational universe! Last week, we hosted some of the nation’s elite musicians and sports figures for Toby Keith’s 60th birthday party at Eddy’s Lakeside Bar at Shangri-La – and this week, we host both legislators from across the state for their Annual Grand Lake Getaway & Legislative Golf Tournament at Shangri-La, as well as boaters and music fans from throughout the region at 2021 Aquapalooza at Grand Lake RV Park at the back of Duck Creek. Grand Lake is becoming America’s place to be!

It looks like Wal-Mart’s “self-checkout only” experiment is extending into our area. Against my better judgment, I went to Wal-Mart in Grove last week. The store was packed, but only one check-out lane was open. Otherwise, it was a massive cluster of people jammed into the job-killing self-checkout sections under a giant cloud of confusion. I don’t know about you, but I’m done!

With the 4th of July behind us, Grand Lake area boat dealers are already looking toward plans for the winter boat shows. It looks like there will be two shows in Tulsa this winter – the historic Tulsa Boat, Sport & Travel Show which lost the vast majority of boat dealers last year during the height of the pandemic. It looks like they won’t be back at that show, either. Almost all the Grand Lake dealers have joined forces with other dealers throughout the state to host their own show in Tulsa next January. Maybe by that time some of them will have a little inventory.

We have a new nationally ranked athlete in our region. Alex Hicks, an eleven-year-old boy from Parsons, Kansas is now the #1 ranked cornhole player in the world. I didn’t even know there was such a ranking – but it’s a great accomplishment for a youngster, for sure. By the way, someone needs to start a petition to change the name of that sport before someone gets really confused and causes a big ruckus.

Here’s another odd sports fact. With Sunday’s win of the Wimbledon Championship, Novak Kjokovic became the third man to win 20 major tennis championships. The other two are Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Ironically, all three of those major champions are playing during the same time in tennis history.

It looks like a good weather weekend ahead. As is normally the case this time of year, there’s a chance for an isolated pop-up thundershower now & then, but for the most part, we’ll have partly cloudy skies with highs around 90 and lows in the mid-70s. It’s Aquapalooze and Legislative Getaway Weekend – and there are fun activities and great music everywhere you look. Remember, though, wherever you party, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me!
