July 25 Random Observations Of The Grand Lake Bum

Triple digit temperatures didn’t slow down Grand Lake fun in the least last weekend. Oklahoma legislators from across the state showed up for their annual Grand Lake Getaway Weekend including a couple of receptions & dinners at Shangri-La, the annual Legislative Golf Tournament, and a big party in Woodard Hollow hosted, as always, by Dr. Doug Cox and Tom & Susan Kimball.

*****

Congratulations are in order, by the way, for an exceptional feat on the golf course for State Representative Anthony Moore from Clinton, while he was enjoying the Grand Lake weekend. He holed an Albatross (three under par) on Shangri-La’s Champions #7 – an accomplishment actually more rare than a hole in one.

*****

Legislators and state officials certainly weren’t the only VIP Grand Lake guests, though. It was a lot of fun to see the OU Football Coaches hanging out on Monkey Island for their annual Coaches’ retreat. It’s probably the last weekend those guys will have the chance to relax for a few months. I’m glad they chose to spend their time at Grand Lake!

It may be an omen for the future. BMW is planning to offer Europeans heated seats in their cars on a subscription basis. All the components will be in the cars, ready to go. But it will take a subscription to activate them. It’s probably just the beginning. We already have radio by subscription, and now I can see the future. “Yes, you have power windows. Do you want them activated?” “Oh, you wanted  the air conditioning and heating system activated? There’s an app for that.”

*****

*****

UNANSWERED QUESTION OF THE WEEK: If 70-80 year olds are generally regarded as unemployable due to mental decline/skill mismatch, why are they the only group exclusively running the country?

*****

OBSERVATION OF THE WEEK: One great thing about Oklahoma summer heat: you can guarantee no one is waiting in your back seat to kill you.

*****

FEEL-OLD MOMENTS OF THE WEEK: Legendary Oklahoma actor and horseman Dale Robertson would have been 99 years old last week. He died in 2013. Gilbert O’Sullivan’s hit song “Alone Again, Naturally” was the number one song in the nation on this date…50 years ago.

Oddly enough, it looks like we might start the dog days of August with high temperatures in the double-digits. High temperatures Friday & Saturday are forecast at upper 80s with a bit of a chance of a few morning showers. Otherwise, it’ll be sunny and hot. High temperatures Sunday will be back in the mid-90s. Lows this weekend will be around 70. There’s plenty of action around the lake, so get out and have some fun before the fall schedules ruin everything. Remember, though, no matter where you decide to party, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me!
