June 18 Random Observations of The Grand Lake Bum

First and foremost, let’s be uncharacteristically serious for just a moment. Tuesday, June 26 is Primary Election Day in Oklahoma. If you are a registered voter in Delaware, Craig, Mayes, or Cherokee County – PLEASE VOTE “YES” to repeal antiquated county restrictions on the sale of alcoholic beverages for on-premises consumption. As we try to grow our tourism industry – and both our job base and our tax base – it is VITAL that we put the Grand Lake area on an even competitive footing with other tourism destinations. Please be sure to get out and VOTE YES on June 26. “Yes is Best for Business!” Let’s DO this!

If you were waiting for the official arrival of Summer to get your party started, it’s time to put on your fun hat. Thursday, June 21 is officially the first day of Summer – Summer Solstice, as the scientists say – longest day of the year. (In fairness, I should point out that Thursday is actually the same length as all the other days – 24 hours – but it has more hours of daylight than any other day of the year in the mainland U.S.)

Two tractor-trailer rigs tragically collided in central Arkansas last week. Even more tragic is the fact that one of them was carrying a load of Fireball whiskey – and the resulting fire from the accident combined with the force to destroy virtually the entire load of Fireball. I had a couple of buddies who headed that way with straws, but they were too late. So sad. The ultimate alcohol abuse.

The times are changing – at least in the political world. In Las Vegas, pimp Dennis Hof, owner of half a dozen brothels and star of the HBO adult reality series “Cathouse” won the Republican primary for a seat in the Nevada state legislature, ousting a three-term incumbent. “It’s all because Donald Trump was Christopher Columbus for me,” he said. “He found the way and I jumped on it.” Following the President’s publication of his book, “The Art of the Deal,” Hof published a book titled “The Art of the Pimp.” He said last week he is planning to sell off some of his brothels to focus more on politics. Hmmm. Is that different, anymore? I remember by old friend Marty Hauan’s great book on politics – “He Buys Organs for Churches, Pianos for Bawdy Houses.”

GRAND LAKE HOLIDAY DINING TIP: Over the 4th of July, every restaurant on Grand Lake will be packed! Here’s a good tip for a trouble-free meal or two for your crew: Order “Ribs for Kids” from the Grand Lake (YMCA 918-786-5774). Cost is $25 per rack while supplies last. The ribs will be smoked baby back/pork loin ribs ready to heat & serve. Order now and pick ‘em up June 29-30 or July 2-3 at the Grove Public Schools Administration Building. Proceeds go to scholarships so kids and adults can participate in memberships and programs at the “Y.” Good food. Good price. Good cause!

The weather for the weekend ahead looks really nice. We may have an isolated thunder shower or two Saturday afternoon, but otherwise we’ll have sunshine, light winds, highs in the upper 80s and lows in the lower 70s. There’s cenrtainly plenty of fun on the Grand Lake agenda this weekend – both outside and inside. But, remember…wherever you decide to party, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me.
