June 22 Random Observations Of The Grand Lake Bum

As we roll toward July, I’m always amazed at the generosity and personal involvement of so many Grand Lakers. Area fireworks fundraising efforts are all nearing their goals, even in the midst of a pandemic. Last weekend, in the midst of boat parades, packed golf courses, and raft-ups all over the lake, Monkey Islanders still pulled out their golf carts to participate in the 2nd Annual Monkey Island Golf Cart Poker Run to continue to raise funds to support the popular Monkey Island Trail. Organizers hoped to raise $3,000 – and the had that accomplished halfway through the event. A total of $6,290 was raised – probably because Islanders are always smart enough to tie fundraising efforts to a five-hour party! Congratulations to all. Thanks to organizer Amanda Cousins and her team of elves, as well as participating Poker Run stops – Doc’s at Shangri-La, The Shebang

It’s nice to see live entertainment returning to the popular lake spots, too. All six clubs on Monkey Island had live entertainment Saturday night – and every place was busy, busy, busy.

Speaking of the entertainment world, there’s double bad news for Brandon Blackstock this week. 1) Superstar Kelly Clarkson filed for divorce from him this week; and 2) they had a pre-nuptial agreement. It may be triple bad news. I don’t know if she’s keeping him as her manager or not.

Maybe just one little rant from me. This would be a good place to have some responsible parents. Stolen golf carts, Wrecked golf carts. Vandalized signs. Stolen golf flags. Stolen signs. Golf course green damage. Could we get a few responsible parents to start keeping a closer eye on your kids? And while I’m at it, golf carts, the course trails, and the highway are NOT good ways to occupy your unsupervised 10-year-old drivers. The end.

Land O Lakes Butter has changed their packaging as part of the new political awareness movement. They have removed the Indian from the center of the package. The rest of the landscaped background remains the same. Nothing new about that idea. They got rid of the Indian and kept the land. That started centuries ago, right?

CONGRATULATIONS to PGA Tour player and Shangri-La Golf Club member Rhein Gibson. Last week, he not only got an albatross (3-under par) by holing the Par 5 Mickey Mantle hole at Shangri-La in two shots, but, in the process, set a new course record at Shangri-La. He shot 60. (Watch for him back on the tour in a couple of weeks.)

DINING AND DRINKING UPDATE: Sharky’s at Hammerhead Marina is only open during VIP Pizza hours as an extension of the restaurant (open until 10:00 p.m. Friday & Saturday, 8:00 p.m. Sunday). Doc’s at Shangri-La offers curbside pickup of pizza, wine and beer, but is not yet open for dine-in service until later this month. FYI, The Landings Restaurant and Morrow’s Bar & Grill have no plans for opening this season.

The Grand Lake Fireworks Cliff Elliott Memorial Fireworks Show has been canceled this year – but Duck Creek, Monkey Island, Horse Creek, and Wolf Creek scheduled fireworks shows are a “go.” Monkey Island, Horse Creek, and Wolf Creek on July 3 – Duck Creek on July 4.

It looks like another nice weekend ahead on Grand Lake. We may have a shower or two here & there Saturday and late Sunday, but just enough to cool things off a little. We’ll have highs in the mid-80s and lows around 70. Another outstanding Grand Lake weekend awaits!  Wherever you party this weekend, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me!
