March 11 Random Observations of The Grand Lake Bum

Daylight Saving Time has finally arrived. I hope you’re enjoying the first week of additional sunlight at the end of the day where it does us all some good instead of at the beginning of the day when it is totally wasted. You fanatic “Grand Lake Sunrise Photographers” can sleep in a little for the next few months.

The arrival of Daylight Saving Time is just in time for Spring Break in Oklahoma this week – running right through the official First Day of Spring on March 20. There’s nothing like the expected influx of Spring Break celebrations on Grand Lake to remind us that the official season of outdoor fun is right in front of us.  Congratulations! We made it!

I’m doing well in my first week of Lent, by the way. I gave up brussels sprouts this year; and I haven’t given in to the temptation yet!

*****

Here we are at the St. Patrick’s Day holiday weekend. Nothing could be timed more perfectly than a holiday in the middle of Spring Break that is dedicated to absolutely nothing but drinking! When you’ve spent the night drinking green beer, don’t be alarmed the next morning. Remember, what goes in must come out.

My friend Linda Wall did some important research last week. If you didn’t know, a “butt” is a traditional unit of volume used for measuring wines and other alcoholic beverages. A butt is generally defined to be two hogsheads, but the size of hogsheads varies according to the contents. In the United States a hogshead is typically 63 gallons and a butt is 126 gallons. So now, when someone says they went to a party where there was a “buttload of whiskey,” you know how much it was. You’re welcome.

In case you haven’t been keeping up with the news, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution last week condemning hate speech. The vote was 403-27. So, now we know. So apparently, there are 27 members of the U.S. Congress who actually support hate speech?

At least we’re going to have a little sunshine for the St. Patrick’s Day weekend as we move toward the first day of Spring next week. High temperatures will be around 50 with lows around 30. We’re just about to put those freezing temperatures behind us.  Of course, the weather is always great for indoor dining & drinking at Grand Lake.  So, party on! It’s a great weekend for it! Remember, though… be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me.
