March 6 Random Observations Of The Grand Lake Bum

“Welcome Back Weekend” started out a little shaky with low temperatures dipping into the mid-30s Friday night – but by Saturday, the sunshine was out, there was virtually no wind, and temperatures were in the mid-60s in time for the Poker Run fun and the first big boating day of the season. The Grove Home & Garden Show had great crowds and the GHS stellar production of “Grease” was a fabulous show. This weekend, the rock crawling crew will be all over the Disney area for the Big Meat Run, and we get even more golf and boating time with the arrival of Daylight Saving Time. Be sure to set your clocks forward one hour Saturday night. Sunday is the big day! Spring Break week kicks off this weekend, too. It’ll be a little cooler with highs in the mid-50s and lows in the 30’s, but I’ll bet everyone finds something fun to do. Next week, it’s St. Patrick’s party time and the Grand Lake Boat & Sport Show, followed immediately by the official arrival of the first day of Spring! We’re rolling now!

*****

Congratulations and our thanks to State Senator Blake “Cowboy” Stevens for his persistence in pushing legislation to make Daylight Saving Time permanent in Oklahoma. He finally managed to gain overwhelming support in the State Senate last week, passing the bill by a 44-3 vote. It now goes to the House. Even with passage, it won’t become effective until and unless the U.S. House of Representatives passes the “Sunshine Protection Act” allowing states the right to make DST permanent. The U.S. Senate passed it unanimously, but the House has yet to ever bring the bill up. Anybody know a member of Congress? Call ‘em!

*****

We’re one step closer. Representative Ken Luttrell also got committee approval for his bill legalizing sports betting in Oklahoma. It now goes to the full house. We may roll into the 21st century, after all!

Grand Lake continues to explode with great events. Last week, B.A.S.S. announced the return of the Bassmaster Classic to Grand Lake in 2024. The Super Bowl of fishing is scheduled for March 22-24, 2024. Weigh-ins will be at the BOK Center in Tulsa. On the very same day as that announcement, GLOC also announced the return of the GLOC Shootout powerboat races to Grand Lake in 2024. The fun never slows down at Grand Lake!

I guess the guy was trying to build up his courage – or maybe he was just hungry. Last weekend a guy went to a Waffle House in Tulsa, ordered, ate, paid for his meal, tipped the waitress… then pulled a gun and demanded the cash in the register. He didn’t have a getaway car, though, so police arrested him on foot nearby. You can’t fix stupid.

GRAND LAKE BUM SHOUT-OUTS: Happy birthday wishes go out this week to Debia Feldman, Russell Perry, Stephanie Winslow-Moore, Jenny Lee, Tiffany Holbrook, Beverly Jones, Becky Brock, Ralph Richardson, Dan Dillingham, Ken MacLeod, Tim Langley, Carol Milanowski, Roberta Arnold, Myles Davidson, Clint Walker, and Kristy Gibbs.

I hope you enjoyed last weekend’s nice weather because high temperatures for the coming weekend will be a little cooler. Highs will be in the mid-50s with lows in the mid-30s. It’s still pretty nice pre-Spring weather, though. Get out and have some fun. Remember, wherever you decide to party, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me!
