May 9 Random Observations Of The Grand Lake Bum

We finally had a weekend of fantastic Grand Lake weather – and it’s a good thing because we are still paying the price for all the rain in the weeks gone by. The lake is finally dropping, but we still need to keep a close eye out for debris on the water while we’re stacking it up on the shoreline. Hopefully that’s all the flooding for this year. Maybe summer is finally on the near horizon. The early signs are appearing – although I haven’t seen any adults in outdoor swimming pools, I’ve seen some kids who are oblivious to the chill. Pool and in-the-water lake time can’t be far away for the rest of us!

We made some more Oklahoma horse racing history last weekend when the 80-1 long shot Rich Strike won the Kentucky Derby. Rick Dawson of Edmond, Oklahoma claimed the horse last fall in a $30,000 claiming race. He had only one win prior to the Derby – and he wasn’t even in the race until a late scratch allowed him to draw in the day before the race; but last Saturday, he turned out to be appropriately named – a $30,000 investment turned into a very “Rich Strike!”

Truth is stranger than fiction. Andrew Wilhoite is in an Indiana jail awaiting trial on charges of murdering his wife. While awaiting trial, he filed as a Republican candidate for a spot on the Clinton, Indiana township board, and got enough votes to be elected in November (one of three qualifying candidates for three open slots). If he’s tried and convicted before November, he won’t be able to serve (as a convicted felon); but if the election comes before his trial, he’ll be sworn into office…from jail.

I was sorry to see that Golden State Warrior Draymond Green was fined $25,000 for showing Memphis Grizzly fans his middle fingers. The Oklahoma legislature doesn’t need any more ideas for new laws.

The Ohio wacko who was restrained in his Frontier Airlines seat with duct tape after groping and assaulting flight attendants has been sentenced to 60 days in prison and another year of probation. The event was last August, and he was just sentenced this week. I’m not sure why it took so long, but if you’ve ever tried to free someone who has been attached to an airline seat with duct tape, that might explain it.

The weather is acting like it should, according to the calendar. We may have a little shower or two Saturday but, for the most part, we’ll have partly cloudy skies and nice temperatures – highs around 80 and lows in the upper 50s. It’s a really big weekend on Grand Lake, so get out there and do something fun. Remember, though, no matter where you decide to party, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me!
