Random Observations Of The Grand Lake Bum

Well, here we are. This weekend is the end of Daylight Saving Time (insert sad emoji). You’ll have to stay up until 2:00 a.m. in order to set your clock back at the appropriate time. If you’re lucky, maybe you can convince the bartender that it’s technically only 1:00 o’clock and you should be allowed to drink for another hour.

I had no idea I was so important to the Big XII football gurus. In the middle of the second quarter of Saturday’s OU-Kansas game, I got a phone call and had to run an emergency errand. I wasn’t crazy about the outcome of the game, but it was unbelievably thoughtful of the Big XII to stop the game and wait until I could get back to watch. I’ve never felt quite so important!

I had a rare occasion to drive my car to a city last week. I went to Tulsa – and I saw an amazing thing. Drivers in Tulsa were using something called a “turn signal” to let other drivers know their intentions. We ought to teach Grand Lake drivers how to use those. It was really helpful. On my return trip to the lake, I was reminded that some things never change on the big highways. Truckers who are driving 75.2 miles per hour still can’t resist the urge to pass a truck in front of them that is traveling at a mere 75 miles per hour.

*****

It was unfortunate that cold and rainy weather caused the cancellation of some outdoor Halloween celebrations last Saturday night – but the folks at The Anchor at Grand Lake figured out how to handle it! They had pumpkin painting, games, treats, costume contests, karaoke and lots of fun for the little ones in an absolute sea of costume families – but they also had the sports screens full of OSU football and World Series baseball for the big kids. Whoever thought of building a sports bar connected to an arcade was a genius – and a hero for moms and dads with little ones!

I couldn’t make all of the big Halloween parties, but I managed to make it to Big Shots and Monkey Island Pub after the ball games. It may be almost November, but there is no shortage of party animals on Monkey Island. I can testify to that!

*****

Speaking of Monkey Island party animals, a newly formed group called Heart of Monkey Island is taking over the longstanding tradition of raising money for less fortunate kids at Christmas. They have already scheduled a fundraising chili cookoff November 11 at the Big Shots parking lot to get the ball rolling. Kudos to these great community minded folks. The only thing better than a Grand Lake party is a Grand Lake party for a great cause!

RANDY KREHBIEL’S RANDOM FACTOID OF THE WEEK: Emily Dickinson’s use of the common meter enables one to sing pretty much all of her poems to the tune of Gilligan’s Island: “Because I could not stop for Death, he kindly stopped for me. The carriage held but just ourselves – and Immortality.”

*****

FUN FACT OF THE WEEK: Ten-time LPGA Major winner Annika Sorenstam has been admitted as a member of Augusta National. I think they’re now up to seven female members at Augusta as they speed their way into the 19th century. They didn’t allow any female members at all until 2012 when they admitted former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: “If you can sit quietly after difficult news; if in financial downturns you remain perfectly calm; if you can see your neighbors travel to fantastic places without a twinge of jealousy; if you can happily eat whatever is put on your plate; if you can fall asleep after a day of running around without a drink or a pill; if you can always find contentment just where you are: you are probably a dog.” – Jack Kornfield

*****

FEEL-OLD MOMENTS OF THE WEEK: Happy birthday to actress Julia Roberts. The “Pretty Woman” star turned 56 over the weekend. Actress Stefanie Powers, perhaps best known for her role as Jennifer Hart in the popular TV series “Hart to Hart,” turns 81 years old this week.

It’s a huge college football week in Oklahoma. It’s Bedlam Football Week – the final one, at least for a while. OU is at OSU Saturday. TCU and Texas Tech kick off the weekend Thursday night. Other games to watch Saturday include Kansas State at Texas, Kansas at Iowa State, Arkansas at Florida, Washington at USC, Oregon State at Colorado, and LSU at Alabama.

In the NFL, Tennessee is at Pittsburgh Thursday night at 7:00. Sunday games include a very early start with Miami and Kansas City facing off from Frankfurt, Germany at 8:30 Sunday morning. Noon games include The Rams at Green Bay, and Tampa Bay at Houston. Philadelphia hosts the Cowboys at 3:30 and Buffalo is at Cincinnati at 7:00. Monday Night Football sends the Chargers to New York to face the Jets.

If Texas and Arizona push things to the 7-game limit, the final two games of the World Series will be Friday & Saturday at 7:00 in Arlington.

It’s also the biggest weekend of the year for horse racing. It’s Breeders’ Cup weekend. Coverage of the World Championship of horse racing begins Friday at 3:00 and Saturday at 12:30 on NBC.

The NBA Regular Season is underway. The OKC Thunder is in the middle of a great home stand. After hosting Detroit Monday and New Orleans Wednesday, the Thunder take on Golden State Friday, Atlanta next Monday, and Cleveland next Wednesday – all at home, all at 7:00, all on Bally Sports Oklahoma.

NASCAR drivers are in Phoenix Sunday for the last race of the season. Coverage of the NASCAR Cup Series Championship begins Sunday at 2:00 on NBC.

PGA players are in Los Cabos, Mexico this week for the Worldwide Technology Championship. Coverage begins at 3:30 Thursday-Saturday and 2:00 Sunday exclusively on the Golf Channel.

Weather for the upcoming weekend will be light years better than the weekend gone by. Instead of rain and chilly temperatures, we’ll have fair to partly cloudy skies – and instead of daytime highs in the 40s, we’ll have nighttime lows in the 40s. High temperatures will be in the 60s – pushing 70 by Sunday. It’s a great weekend to have some lake fun! Remember, though, wherever you decide to party, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me!
