September 19 Random Observations Of The Grand Lake Bum

Fall is officially here. I’ll be honest with you – temperatures in the 90s and trees full of green leaves is my kind of fall! Spending a morning on the golf course and an afternoon & evening on the water was the perfect way to spend the last official weekend of summer – and I certainly wasn’t alone. The lake was crazy busy over the past weekend. The first day of fall is this week – and Grand Lake is kicking off another season with an incredible array of fun stuff. Saturday night, there are three OMG events happening all at the same time – and that doesn’t even count the OU-Kansas State game Saturday night.

Speaking of football, I continue to be amazed that the best job in all of sports is the job of unsuccessful coach. Nebraska wanted their head football coach Scott Frost out of the program so badly they paid him $15 million to not work there, anymore. If they had waited two more weeks, they would have only owed him $7.5 million, but they wanted a new coach before their game against Oklahoma. For the record, Scott Frost had not lost a game by more than a touchdown in the team’s last 13 outings. Saturday’s score was OU 49-Nebraska 14. I guess they showed him! By the way, if anyone is looking for a bad coach to pay, I’m worse than Scott Frost!

Do you miss analogue television? Do you long for fuzzy pictures that make you squint to determine what is going on? If so, sign up for the new Thursday Night NFL Football on Amazon Prime Video. Ugh. That picture will take you back. I’m sure they’ll work hard to get the issues corrected, but so far…it’s awful.

In the meantime, technology is throwing a curve ball to fans around Grand Lake. ESPN+ - what? “I thought I had all the ESPN channels!” I’ve heard that 100 times since OU and OSU games could only be found on ESPN+ in back-to-back weeks. “Prime Video? What’s THAT? What Channel is it on?” I’ve heard that stuff over and over for the past few days. Adjustments are difficult. Change is hard. But, if anything can make us adapt quickly, it’s football!

GRAND LAKE BUM SHOUT-OUTS: Happy birthday wishes go out this week to Bill Howell, Juli Miller, DeAnne McAbee, Julie Pace, Theresa McDougall, Bryan Timberlake, Rick Cooper, Sheryl Chinowth, Susan Jones, Lyn Moore, Justin May, Vernon Ellis, Coreey Black, Angela Good, Jerri Parrish, Sheila Bond, Shelley Koster, Conley Cornell, Heather May, Chloe Goff, Kathy Lungren Baker, Barbara Oden, Lea McMahon, Debbie Mitchell, Drenda Cox, and Susan Moritz.

BEST GRAND LAKE EVENTS THIS WEEK: There is no shortage of activity on Grand Lake this week. Start your weekend with Taste Testing at Grove Royal Liquor 4:00-6:00. Saturday evening is also the Cedar Port Marina Customer Appreciation Party in Disney and the Yellowstone Costume Party at Monkey Island Pub. Sunday-Tuesday, Shangri-La Golf Club hosts the MSSU Invitational Tournament.

RANDY KREHBIEL’S RANDOM FACTOID OF THE WEEK: Patti Page's 1965 rendition of "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte" was not recorded until after the release of the film of a similar title for which the song was written. It was Page's last Gold Record and last Top 10 hit.

FUN FACT OF THE WEEK: If you wonder about that sucking sound that is taking all the money out of the economy, experts predict there will be $10 BILLION spent on political advertising this election year.

BEST FACEBOOK POST OF THE WEEK: I was watching a show for about 10 minutes, and this lady was listing all of these great things to do for fun. Then I realized it was one of the religious channels, and she was reading a list of sins.

BEST SIGN SEEN THIS WEEK: Don’t blame others for the road you travel. It’s your own asphalt.

BEST TWEET OF THE WEEK: Seeking one night stand. Maybe two. I have two lamps.

BEST PUN OF THE WEEK: I’m trying to organize a hide & seek tournament, but good players are really hard to find.

UNANSWERED QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Was the pole vault accidentally discovered by a clumsy javelin thrower?

OBSERVATION OF THE WEEK: When someone tells you that your dreams are silly, remember there’s a millionaire walking around who invented the swimming pool noodle.

FEEL-OLD MOMENTS OF THE WEEK: Italian actress and longtime sex symbol Sophia Loren turns 88 this week. Actor/comedian Bill Murray, star of both television and the big screen, turns 72. The popular television program M*A*S*H made its debut in this week of September – exactly 50 years ago!

Remember, though, no matter where you decide to party, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me!
