September 9 Random Observations of The Grand Lake Bum
What a fabulous weekend gone by on Grand Lake. Friday, I got to see a parade of classic boats as the folks here for the Mahogany & Chrome Classic Boat Show took a little cruise to lunch at Doc’s at Shangri-La. The docks looked like a 1960’s flashback photo. The same was true Saturday when they all lined up at Arrowhead Yacht Club for the annual show. Those old classics are absolutely amazing – but not as amazing as the guys & gals who keep them looking that way!
You got the word that Grand Lake’s summer season has officially been extended through October 31, right? A herd of my Monkey Island pals made personal watercraft run from the Island up Elk River Sunday. #bestboatingoftheyear
It ought to be a wild weekend on Grand Lake this weekend. Friday the 13th and a full moon. What could possibly go wrong?
There has been plenty of controversy about Wal-Mart and their decision to stop selling ammunition. I dunno. It makes sense to me. I’ve said for many years that bullet control would be a lot more efficient than gun control. After all…guns don’t kill people. Bullets kill people.
Dancing with the Stars returns for another season Monday night, September 16. Among this year’s contestants will be former Presidential Press Secretary Sean Spicer and former Supermodel Christie Brinkley. When the mighty fall, they fall hard…and far.
Cyber attack thieves are getting downright brazen. The Oklahoma Law Enforcement Retirement System was recently the victim of cyber thieves who stole $4.2 million from the account. We’ll wait to see if the thieves were really gutsy or really stupid when they decided to pick the cops as their victim.
Are you paying attention to the college football season yet? My pal Mickey Thompson is – and he’s ready to make his prediction on the Red River Rivalry score: OU 82, Texas 81 in 5 overtimes. LOL. He may be onto something.
DINING AND DRINKING BY BOAT ON GRAND LAKE: Morrow’s Bar & Grill is closed for the season. Quarterdeck Café at Tera Miranda remains open Friday-Sunday through September 21 – no breakfast service, though. Eddy’s Lakeside Bar at Shangri-La Marina and Ugly’s Grill & Bar at Thunder Bay Marina remain open Friday, Saturday & Sunday through September.

HEALTH TIP OF THE WEEK: Maxim Magazine reports details of a new medical study that indicates the best way to avoid heart attacks is increased sexual activity. I guess I’d better start getting my affairs in order.
BEST PUN OF THE WEEK: Did you hear about the Italian chef who died? He pasta way. We cannoli do so much. He just ran out of thyme. Sending olive my prayers to his family. His wife is really upset, cheese still not over it. You never sausage a tragic thing.
FEEL-OLD MOMENTS OF THE WEEK: Superstar model/actress Raquel Welch turned 79 last week. Proof that comedy legends live longer: Dick Van Dyke is 93, Carl Reiner is 97, Mel Brooks is 93, and Norman Lear is 97.
GRAND LAKE BUM SHOUT-OUTS: Happy birthday wishes go out this week to Wes Krei, Stevie Fernandez, Steve Pace, Dave Deardorff, Jill Hingey-Nammari, Donnie Crain, Jim Larimore, CeCe Mitchell, Shana Wheeler, Jennifer Jeffers, Butch Bruenger, Diane Bruenger, Neil Purdie, Trent Richey, Rich Lillard, Phillip Lancaster, Marcie Wallace Hill, and Angie Drake. Congratulations, too, to Monkey Islander Jim Wyche. The 75 year-old Monkey Islander shot a 69 on the golf course at Shangri-La last Friday. That’s three under par – and six strokes under his age!
UNANSWERED QUESTION OF THE WEEK: If vegetables are so good, why do vegans always try to make them taste like meat?

The weather for the weekend ahead looks like September. Look for and light winds with high temperatures in the 80s and lows in the upper 60s. We may have a little shower Friday but, other than that, sunshine! Get out and have a fabulous time both on the lake and at your favorite club or restaurant. Remember, though… wherever you decide to party, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me.
