Where to go

The tailwaters below Pensacola Dam near Disney, OK are a well-known winter eagle area — eagles feed on fish in the discharge water. Access points, viewing areas and any closures are set by GRDA, which manages the dam and shoreline; check grda.com for current public access and program dates before you drive out.

When to visit

Bald eagles are generally present in the region during the winter months, and mornings tend to be the most active viewing time. Numbers vary year to year — we don't publish counts we can't verify. GRDA and the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation are the authoritative sources for current sightings and events.

What to bring

• Binoculars or a spotting scope — the eagles are close, but not that close
• A long telephoto lens if you're shooting photos (300mm+)
• Warm layers, gloves, and a hat — the wind off the dam is no joke
• A thermos of coffee. Trust us.
