The world's longest multiple-arch dam

At 6,565 feet (GRDA), Pensacola Dam is the longest multiple-arch dam in the world. It stretches across the Neosho (Grand) River just north of Disney, Oklahoma, with 51 arches supported by massive concrete buttresses.

Why it was built

Construction started in 1938 as a Depression-era public works project under the Grand River Dam Authority — GRDA was chartered by the Oklahoma legislature specifically to build and operate the dam. It came online in March 1940, generating hydroelectric power and creating Grand Lake o' the Cherokees behind it. During World War II the powerhouse ran around the clock supplying electricity for war production.

What the dam does today

• Hydroelectric power — 6 generating units feeding the GRDA grid
• Flood control — floodgates release water to protect downstream communities
• Recreation — the reason 46,500 acres of lake exist for boating, fishing, and shoreline living
• Wildlife habitat — the tailwaters below the dam are prime bald eagle habitat in winter

GRDA has historically offered public tours of the dam and powerhouse; availability changes and is not verified here — check with GRDA before planning a trip.
